Leicester are a genuine European surprise in an era of knowledge

There is a glorious scene in the film, I Believe in Miracles, the excellent account of Nottingham Forest’s rise to win two European Cups in 1979 and 1980, when they are taking on Cologne at The City Ground in the first leg of the 1979 semi-final.

Peter Taylor, Brian Clough’s usually-meticulous assistant, was responsible for scouting and had watched Cologne. Remember, this was an age where there was no Wyscout, no Bundesliga highlights on TV and no way to watch Cologne other than getting out there to do so.

Taylor had done so and to his mind they were a team which lacked pace and intensity and thus would be slow starters.
