Fans return to live sport as World Snooker Championship gets underway in Sheffield

Fans have returned to a sporting event in the United Kingdom for the first time since Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were eased.

The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield is a third full for the opening session of the World Snooker Championship on Saturday morning with around 320 watching on.

It is the first of a series of test events on the road to a return to normality at sports events, with Sunday's FA Cup semi-final between Leicester City and Southampton at Wembley set to be watched by 4,000 fans.

The 320 or so ticket holders for the first session were required to provide a negative test
Capacity at the Crucible will be ramped up as the 17-day tournament progresses with hopes a full house of 985 will be able to attend the final on May 2-3

It is hoped to ramp up the number of spectators at the blue riband snooker championship as it progresses over the next 17 days with hopes of a full-capacity crowd if 980 for the final on May 2-3.
