Raiders promote TE Gabe Holmes from practice squad

ALAMEDA – The Raiders promoted rookie tight end Gabe Holmes to the 53-man roster on Friday afternoon.

He fills an open roster spot created when safety Tevin McDonald was waived on Thursday. That vacancy could’ve been filled by veteran safety Nate Allen, who is eligible and ready to come off of short-term injured reserve.

Head coach Jack Del Rio said Allen would be activated before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Holmes was signed as an undrafted free agent, and a good preseason earned him a spot on the practice squad. He stands 6-foot-5, 255 pounds and hails from Purdue, where he was a productive receiving tight end.
