Raiders’ Khalil Mack could become team’s first AP Defensive Player of the Year since 1980

Third-year players at or near the top their class? Yeah, the Raiders have a couple of those.

The NFL will announce its top individual awards Saturday night in Houston on the eve of Super Bowl LI and the two faces of Oakland’s franchise are both in the mix.

Sure, quarterback Derek Carr isn’t much more than a long-shot to take home the Associated Press’ Most Valuable Player award, but edge rusher Khalil Mack should be considered the favorite for the AP Defensive Player of the Year.

Mack has already won a pair of honors, being named by Sporting News and the Professional Football Writers of America as the league’s top defender.
