Raiders cut incumbent starting kicker Giorgio Tavecchio

NAPA — The Raiders waived Giorgio Tavecchio, last season’s starting kicker, a source told the Bay Area News Group.

Tavecchio participated in practice Friday and received the news later in the day after the Raiders’ seventh session of training camp.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, who first reported the transaction, the Raiders signed veteran kicker Mike Nugent in his place. Nugent will likely oversee rookie Eddy Piñeiro’s development during camp, and one could reasonably assume he’s not too big of a threat to win the starting job. If anything, punter and holder Johnny Townsend only has to hold for right-footed kickers now instead of the left-footed Tavecchio.
