TORONTO - On their final day in Canada, the A’s let go of their one Canadian player, designating reliever John Axford for assugnment.
Axford has struggled much of the season since coming off the DL on May 21, putting up a 6.43 ERA and walking 17 batters in 21 innings. With Oakland going young, the team decided to part ways with the 34-year-old in order to reinstate Ryan Dull, 27, from the disabled list, rather than sending out Frankie Montas or Josh Smith or designating Simon Castro for assignment. All are at least 5 years younger than Axford, who will be a free agent after the season.
