Jets Trade QB Christian Hackenberg To Raiders

Christian Hackenberg has a new NFL home. The New York Jets have traded Hackenberg to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional 2019 7th round pick. It's not yet known what those conditions are for the 7th round pick.

The news was announced by Todd Bowles today at Jets' practice. Hackenberg's trade comes after he didn't take a single rep in OTAs today. The trade is likely why Hackenberg was held out.

The Jets used a second round pick on Hackenberg, but he never played a regular season snap in two years. The Jets' selection of Sam Darnold further cemented the fact that Hackenberg had no future in New York. He was the #51 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Derek Carr is the clear-cut starter in Oakland, but perhaps Hackenberg can carve out a backup role. He'll need to beat out the likes of EJ Manuel and Connor Cook.

In his preseason work, Hackenberg was not great. He completed just 59 of 121 passes (48.76%) for 531 yards, 3 TDs and 4 INTs. That the Jets were able to get anything in return for Hackenberg (unlike Bryce Petty) is a bit of a surprise.
