Why John Calipari faces his biggest challenge yet in Kentucky basketball tenure

LEXINGTON – There have been challenges in John Calipari’s Hall of Fame career before.

After all, Calipari spent much of his career coaching at programs with far fewer resources than Kentucky and still willed them to national prominence.

It is difficult to imagine any coaching challenge was bigger than the one he faces in the coming months though.

“I’ve been through this kind of stuff,” Calipari said Sunday after his team dropped its third straight game in a 79-62 loss to previously winless Georgia Tech. “I just haven’t done it in this environment.”

Kentucky fans have known since the spring that Calipari would be tested with a level of inexperience this season even noteworthy for his annual roster churn, but the loss of sophomore forward Keion Brooks, the only returning player to score a point in a game for UK last season, to a leg injury was unexpected.
