What we have learned about Kentucky football on the day season was supposed to start

LEXINGTON – In an alternate universe, Kentucky is opens the 2020 football season on Thursday.

The Wildcats’ game against Eastern Michigan was slated for Sept. 3 – moved off the original Sept. 5 date due to the Kentucky Derby being postponed to the first Saturday in September – but the Southeastern Conference switched to a league-only, 10-game schedule as its strategy for playing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, the Wildcats are still more than three weeks removed from the new season opener, Sept. 26 at Auburn.

That gap leaves plenty of time for the team to round into form, but the slow burn of preseason practice has already revealed some lessons about what fans can expect if the season is played.
