It’s amazing the things that Jon Scott of BigBlueHistory.net remembers. Today he brought out of the vault the last time Avery Johnson played against UK.
It was the First Round of the 1988 NCAA Tournament in Cincinnati. Avery Johnson played every minute for Southern, scoring only 2 points but dishing out 9 assists. Ed Davender had 30 points, Rex Chapman scored 23, and Eric Manuel would have a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double in a 99-84 win.
The Cats would beat Maryland in the Second Round before falling to Villanova in the Sweet 16. Although I should mention that the wins would later be vacated by the NCAA.
