NCAA set to adopt simplified NIL guidelines allowing states to follow its laws without penalty

As Kentucky prepares to implement its own name, image and likeness guidelines starting July 1, the NCAA has made it clear it will not stand in the way of individual states enforcing their own laws.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, the NCAA is expected to adopt a “more permissive, alternative model” that will allow student-athletes across the country to capitalize on NIL opportunities starting July 1. The NCAA Division I Board of Directors will meet Thursday to further explore this new model.

The idea is that interim guidelines will create a stopgap on the issue until Congress can pass a uniform bill, ultimately putting NIL guidelines in the hands of individual states and allowing those with laws in place to follow through without penalty.
