LEXINGTON — Freshman Beau Allen opens Kentucky football's first game week as the Wildcats' No. 2 quarterback.
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said the school is still waiting to learn the status of Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood, who was widely assumed to be the team's backup if eligible, noting that because Gatewood is transferring from one Southeastern Conference team to another his transfer waiver has to be cleared by the NCAA and SEC.
Stoops declined to specify if Allen had won the backup job or was only listed as the No. 2 quarterback because Gatewood's status for the opener is uncertain.
