35 years after Phi Slama Jama, UK and Houston finally meet in tourney

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky and Houston will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the first time Friday in Kansas City.

But for a few former Kentucky players and coaches, the game is likely to bring back memories of what might have been.

Exactly 35 years ago, Joe B. Hall’s 1983-84 Wildcats were in Seattle preparing for a Final Four matchup with Georgetown, certain they would meet Houston and future Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon in the title game if they could just advance past Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas.

Because of its Super Bowl Sunday victory over Houston in Rupp Arena earlier that season, Kentucky's players were confident they could win it, too.
