The University of Akron softball team defeated host Youngstown State 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader to give Zips softball coach Julie Jones her 500th career victory.
Jones, in her 11th season with the Zips, is 500-524-4 in her 21 years as a head coach and has a 256-283-2 record at Akron.
Freshman left-hander Lexie Handley pitched a complete game and struck out eight and allowed two hits for her 10th win of the season. Senior Anna Tarpley had an RBI single and junior Ashley Sims scored on senior Alyssa Nicholas’ stolen base attempt to lead the Zips’ offense.
