The University of Akron softball team split a doubleheader with Youngstown State on Tuesday in the 2016 home opener for the Zips (14-13).
Erin Seiler allowed two hits and struck out six in a complete-game shutout to lead the Zips to an 8-0 win over the Penguins (8-11) in the first game. Alyssa Nicholas had two RBI to lead the Zips’ offense.
The Zips did not fare as well in the second game, as the Penguins scored eight runs in the top of the second inning in an 11-8 win over the Zips. Savannah Fruin had three hits, including a solo home run, and Taylor Kirian had three RBI to lead the Zips in the second game.
