University of Akron junior Sophia Geier was named 2017 Mid-American Conference women’s tennis player of the year and coach Brandon Padgett was named MAC coach of the year on Wednesday.
Padgett led the Zips to a 23-3 record, including a 22-match win streak and a 7-1 MAC record, and is the first coach in program history to be named coach of the year.
Geier was 23-1 at No. 1 singles, including 7-1 in the MAC, and is the fifth player in program history to win the award, joining Zara Harutyunyan (2009-11) and Ariadna Blinova (2016).
Blinova was named second-team All-MAC and senior Shannon Newnes earned the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award, the sixth Zip to be selected for the honor.
