The University of Akron won the men’s and women’s Mid-American Conference track and field championships on Saturday afternoon.
The victories gave both programs their seventh outdoor team titles and marked the first time in school history the Zips swept both championships during the indoor and outdoor campaigns.
By placing ahead of Kent State, the Zips secured the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge over the Flashes by a count of 7.5-6.5. Six of Akron’s points come from the track and field program and the cross country program.
Akron’s Dennis Mitchell was selected the MAC coach of the year and senior Hakeem Lawrence was acknowledged as the men’s most outstanding track performer.
