The University of Akron softball team defeated host Kent State in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Friday to secure a spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Carley Childress had an RBI single and Gabrielle Fredericks had an RBI double to lead the Zips (29-22-1, 11-8-1 MAC) to a 3-0 win over the Golden Flashes (34-20, 14-7) in Game 1.
Akron starting pitcher Erin Seiler held the Flashes to one hit through seven innings and struck out five for her 25th win of the season.
The Zips scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in Game 2, but the Flashes rallied with four runs in the first, two in the third and two in the fifth to defeat the Zips 8-3.
