University of Akron junior Sophia Geier was named the Mid-American Conference women’s tennis singles player of the week. The Zips lost to West Virginia over the weekend, but Geier defeated the Mountaineers Kaja Mrgole in two sets 6-1, 6-0. Geier also won her doubles match when she teamed up with fellow junior Ariadna Blinova. For the season Geier is now 2-1 in singles play and 2-0 in her doubles matches. “Sophia started off the spring season playing at a high level, which is right where she left off in the fall. She has been working hard to add more dimensions to her game and it is definitely paying off,” coach Brandon Padgett said.
