University of Akron junior Clayton Murphy advanced to the finals of the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Men’s Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday.
Murphy ran a 3:49.03 to win his semifinal heat and earn a qualifying spot for Thursday’s finals.
Four other Zips are competing in events not completed at press time — senior Alex McCune in the decathlon, junior Matt Rowland in the pole vault, and senior Joe Oduho and sophomore Terrell McClain in the long jump.
Kent State senior Jesse Oxley is also competing in the pole vault.

Murphy and UA assistant Tomasz Smialek were named Great Lakes Regional men’s track athlete and assistant coach of the year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association.
