The University of Akron men’s and women’s track and field team combined to win four events on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference championships at the Stile Athletics Field House in Akron.
Senior Alexis Cooks won the weight throw with a toss of 66-3 to win the third championship in her Akron career, and sophomore Jackie Siefring turned in a school- and Stile Field House-record performance in the pentathlon. Siefring had a cumulative score of 4,215 to lead the Zips women to an overall one-point lead over Eastern Michigan after five events.
Matt Rowland won the pole vault with a jump of 17-¾, and the men’s distance medley of Garrett Crichlow, Taron Slone, Dan Zupan and Clay Murphy set a conference meet record with a time of 9:45.
