The Kent State field hockey team began the 2016 season with a 3-1 win over Michigan State on Friday in Kent.
Shannon Talbot scored in the 24th minute off a deflection to give the Golden Flashes (1-0) an early lead. The Spartans (0-1) answered in the 29th minute to even the score, but Helen Harper notched her first goal of the season in the 33rd minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Laila Richter scored in the 35th minute to put the Flashes ahead 3-1.
The Flashes host Villanova on Saturday at noon.
Volleyball
The Kent State volleyball team defeated Stetson 3-1 in the first game and lost to UCF 3-1 in the second game of the Holiday Inn Orlando East/UCF Invitational in Orlando.
