On the record: Kent State wins its first MAC championship in women’s soccer

Kristen Brots scored the lone goal Sunday at Dix Stadium to lift Kent State to its first Mid-American Conference women’s soccer championship.

Brots scored in the 86th minute as the Golden Flashes (15-2-2) beat Northern Illinois 1-0 in the title game. The victory earned the Flashes an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The date and opponent for Kent State’s first NCAA match will be announced Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Kent State keeper Ashleah McDonald came up big with five saves in the second half Sunday.

Brots’ game-winner followed a corner kick by Jenna Hellstrom. When Hellstrom played the ball in, it bounced around before making its way to Abbie Lawson (Stow), who fired a shot off a Northern Illinois (5-11-5) defender.
