On the record: Kent State standout wrestler Ian Miller shines in opening day of NCAA Championships

Kent State senior wrestler Ian Miller kicked off the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City with a 2-0 start Thursday.

Miller, the No. 4 seed at 157 pounds, compiled four takedowns to secure a 9-4 victory in the opening session. In the round of 16, he secured a pin just 1:11 into the first round.

Miller will face No. 1 seed Isaiah Martinez of Illinois Friday in the quarterfinals.

Overall, the Golden Flashes are in 15th place with eight points after Thursday’s opening round.

Senior Mack McGuire (133 pounds) opened with a 3-2 victory in overtime, but dropped his second match 8-3.
