'That's somebody's family treasure': Concussion concerns take forefront for KU football following player retirement

LAWRENCE — Jordan Shelley-Smith doesn’t remember his first concussion, or for that matter, how many he’s suffered in his five seasons at Kansas.

He is, however, confident he’s never been knocked out as a result of any of them.

Well, fairly confident, at least.

“I guess the whole point of a concussion is not to remember, right?” Shelley-Smith said with a laugh.

Shelley-Smith, a senior offensive lineman, announced his retirement Sept. 26 in front of his teammates and the KU coaching staff. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound native of Waco, Texas, gave it one more go this season, returning for the Jayhawks’ contest Sept.
