LAWRENCE — The Kansas football team has filled one of its assistant coaching vacancies with a 15-year veteran of the Big 12.
The Jayhawks have hired Joe DeForest to coach their special teams next season, a KU Athletics source confirmed Friday afternoon.
DeForest spent three seasons (2013-15) coaching special teams/safeties at West Virginia before his contract was not renewed in the offseason. He was defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers for one season (2012).
Prior to his time with WVU, DeForest spent 11 seasons as special teams coordinator/safeties coach for Oklahoma State (2001-11).
DeForest, 50, joins Jason Phillips (wide receivers) and Todd Bradford (linebackers) as new assistants on second-year coach David Beaty’s staff.
