MANHATTAN — Doug Weaver, the Wildcats’ first-year coach, recognized his team would have to play “the perfect game” to have any chance against No. 7 Kansas.

Perfection was never attained. The young Cats gave the ball away on four interceptions and two fumbles. Each contributed to KU scores and the Jayhawks claimed an easy win to open Big Eight play before 18,000 in K-State’s Memorial Stadium.

“Our line really went after them,” KU coach Jack Mitchell said of the rout. “We’ve got a fine bunch of kids.
