Stat of the Day: 100-Hit Whit

Whit Merrifield had two of the Royals’ five hits in Monday’s 3–2 walk-off loss in Cleveland. His first hit, a solo home run in the fourth inning, gave Kansas City a 1–0 lead before a two-hour, 23-minute rain delay knocked out both starting pitchers.

His second hit, a sixth-inning single, was his 100th hit of the season, making him the first player in the Majors to reach 100 hits. He’s the fifth Royals player (8th time) to reach 100 hits in 79 team games or fewer, and the first since Mike Sweeney, who did it in three consecutive seasons from 2000–02.
