The Royals are close to a four-year contract extension with second baseman Whit Merrifield, according to MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi. No terms of any proposed deal have been disclosed. A four-year deal would cover all of Merrifield’s arbitration years, but not any of his free agent years. Merrfield would still be eligible for free agency after the 2022 season, when he will be going on 34-years old.
