On Nov. 20, 1997, the Royals re-acquired Jeff Conine from the Marlins in exchange for Minor League pitcher Blaine Mull.

Conine was originally drafted by Kansas City as a 58th-round pick in 1987 and made his Major League debut with the Royals in 1990. The Florida Marlins, however, made Conine their 22nd pick in the 1992 expansion draft.

After five seasons (1993–97) with the Marlins — in which he hit .291/.360/.467 with 98 HR and 422 RBI — he was traded back to the Royals.

Conine was limited to just 93 games in 1998 with the Royals thanks to two separate stints on the 15-day DL.
