A fantastic week for Jeremy Guthrie got even better Friday.
First, he graduated from Stanford with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Then an ignominious pitching record he set last season was wiped from baseball’s record books.
Unfortunately for the 36,195 on hand at Kauffman Stadium on Friday night, Guthrie’s former teammate, Edinson Volquez, now holds the distinction of authoring the worst start in Major League Baseball history since 1914.
Volquez became the first starting pitcher in more than 102 seasons to allow 12 runs in one official inning or fewer during a 13-4 beating by Houston in the opening game of a five-game homestand.
