Royals Acquire Melky Cabrera In Trade With White Sox

The Kansas City Royals acquired Melky Cabrera in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, both teams announced.

Kansas City designated minor league righty Andrew Edwards for assignment in order to make room for Cabrera.

The 32-year-old is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the White Sox prior to the 2015 season. He is still owed $5.2 million of his $15 million salary this season, and Chicago will pay half of that remaining salary.

The Royals wanted to add another bat for the stretch run, and Cabrera - who played for the Royals in 2011 - will provide that. He is batting .295 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs so far this season.

Kansas City is currently three games behind the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central but are in possession of the final wild card spot, 2.5 games ahead of the rest of the pack.
