Chiefs' Marcus Peters gets first-team work at corner

ST. JOSEPH

The Chiefs began preparing for the looming three-game suspension of top cornerback Sean Smith on Sunday, as Smith got the majority of his work with the second-team unit for the first time all camp.

In his place, first-round pick Marcus Peters got the reps with the first team in the base defense with Phillip Gaines, who moved inside in nickel, leaving Smith's outside slot to Jamell Fleming in that formation.

“We're not gonna have Sean those first three games so we've got to get guys used to playing with each other and find the best combination,” defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said.
