Andy Reid says Willie Gay Jr. is ‘getting close’ to Chiefs’ return

The Kansas City Chiefs placed Willie Gay Jr. on injured reserve on September 2 — after the linebacker suffered a turf toe injury in the team’s final preseason game.

Gay’s placement on injured reserve meant that he would be out for at least the first three games of the season. On Wednesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Gay’s rehab.

“He’s done a nice job with it,” said Reid. “He’s been very diligent with it, and he’s getting there. He’s getting close. That literally is day by day as we go here, especially down the stretch with this.
