Titans want to keep play-calling simple for Marcus Mariota

Tennessee Titans’ coach Mike Mularkey is going to try to keep things simple for second-year quarterback Marcus Mariota this fall.

Mularkey said Mariota struggled with calling plays in the huddle as a rookie last year because of the complexity of the play calls of former coach Ken Whisenhunt. And he didn’t have to do it at Oregon.

“We’re trying to simplify the terminology to its simplest form, so there’s not a lot of verbiage, but it says a volume of what we want everybody to do, and that will help him in the process of being able to spit it out, get to the line of scrimmage and have more time to see what defenses are trying to do,’’ Mularkey said at the scouting combine.
