NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell accepted an award on behalf of the league Friday at EverBank Field as part of the area’s Project 17 initiative.
Goodell was honored at a private luncheon by the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program with the inaugural Leadership in Sports Health, Safety and Research Award. JSMP’s Project 17 program is seeking to put full-time certified athletic trainers in all 17 Duval County public high schools by 2020. Five schools received the trainers this school year — Baldwin, Englewood, Jackson, Raines and Ribault. Parker and Westside will get them for the upcoming school year.
The NFL provided a $50,000 grant when the program was announced last year and will contribute a second grant of that amount this year, the Jaguars announced.
