As the Jaguars anticipated, tight end Julius Thomas will undergo surgery on his right hand Wednesday and miss up to the first three regular season games.
Thomas broke a bone in the hand Aug. 14 against Pittsburgh when he was hit by cornerback William Gay and was fitted with a cast. During a follow-up appointment Monday, he reported discomfort and an exam discovered a loose ligament.
Thomas had a second opinion Tuesday outside the Jacksonville area.
The Jaguars hoped to have Thomas back for the Sept. 13 opener against Carolina, but the surgery could keep him out until the Oct.
