New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who knows something about quarterbacks, said this week he has been impressed with Blake Bortles’ decision-making when leaving the pocket.
Instead of immediately tucking and running, like he did most of the time last year, Bortles’ game has matured to the point he wants to exhaust all of his passing options before heading up the field.
“When he scrambles, he’s scrambling with the intent to throw,” Payton said. “That becomes problematic because now the [play] is extended, and we’ve seen guys like [Ben] Roethlisberger and Cam Newton and these other quarterbacks that extend plays.
