Gene Frenette: The NFL got the Super Bowl it wanted

Nobody is happier about this Super Bowl matchup than commissioner Roger Goodell and all his NFL cronies within the New York league office.

It’s exactly how the NFL would script the 50th Big Game, a quarterback showdown between five-time MVP Peyton Manning and MVP-in-waiting Cam Newton. You know there had to be a collective sigh of relief at 345 Park Avenue when the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers won their respective conference championship games.

This is the ideal storyline. No way did Goodell want to be standing on a podium to present the Vince Lombardi trophy to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
