Hines Column: ISU’s Spain loss doesn’t mean much, but it is instructive

Staff writer Travis Hines

I really don’t know what players comprise the roster of the Venezuelan national team, the outfit that handed the Iowa State men’s basketball team an 82-77 loss Wednesday in Madrid.

It doesn’t really matter who is on that team. Just like Wednesday’s result doesn’t really matter.

This fits the definition of an event that requires nothing more than a shoulder shrug and an utterance of “Whatever.”

Sure, it makes for great fodder for comedy and hot sports takes, but in the grand scheme of things – hell, in the small scheme of things – this game is as meaningful as the 108 points I scored in a single game with Dennis Scott in NBA Live ’95 as a kid.
