When asked about the ever-present rumors swirling around his men’s basketball coach Tuesday, Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard noted that after four off-seasons of mostly the same NBA rumblings, he’s largely become numb to the fervor.
But, despite however old-hat this silly season of speculation has become for observers of ISU basketball, make no mistake about it. The moment of truth for Fred Hoiberg is fast approaching.
This summer is similar to each of the past three. Hoiberg will once again be a hot commodity for any NBA front office conducting a coaching search after he led the Cyclones to a fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance and second-straight Big 12 tournament championship while playing a brand of ball that mimics what the most successful of NBA offenses do while possessing a coaching demeanor that seems designed for the grind of the pro game.
