Fred Hoiberg undergoes successful open heart surgery

As reported last week, Iowa State Cyclones head coach Fred Hoiberg underwent to replace his aortic valve. The procedure took place at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“Everything went very well,” Dr. Rakesh Suri said in a statement released by the university. “The operation was a success and Mr. Hoiberg is in recovery and doing very well himself.”

Last year, Hoiberg had surgery to replace a pacemaker in his chest. The initial aortic root operation in June 2005 ended his NBA career after 10 seasons in the league.

Fred Hoiberg has coached Iowa State for the last five seasons and has led the Cyclones to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances — a school record.
