Football: The conversation that made Jones embrace his new cornerback home

Corner may be the king of the secondary, the marquee position on the back end that can come equipped with nicknames for its top players.

But Jay Jones wanted nothing to do it with. He wasn’t thrilled when told over winter break where his new home would be.

“I was like, man, corner?” said the Iowa State senior. “I was thinking safety or something.”

Jones isn’t questioning the move anymore. A chat with defensive backs coach D.K. McDonald changed Jones’ outlook and he’s using the spring to try to fit into at his new position.

“It’s going to be bumps in the road and in the long run he told me the finished product will be better than where you started on day one with this,” Jones said.
