The biggest inspiration for Iowa State beating Northern Iowa 31-7 on Saturday didn’t play a snap.
Defensive tackle Mitchell Meyers just stood on the sideline. Meyers, who is battling cancer, returned for the game and coach Paul Rhoads presented him with the game ball following the win.
“Mitchell came up to me and said you don’t have any idea how happy I am to be back in Ames,” Rhoads said. “We just wish the good lord would bless him and allow him to stay here and he was done with his fight, but he is still in the middle of his fight, but yeah, again, fun honor for me to be able to do that to him, for him, and I promise there wasn’t a teammate in that locker room that didn’t understand and know that he deserved it.
