Pfannenstiel confirms contact from Newcastle to become director of football before Saudi takeover collapsed

Lutz Pfannenstiel has confirmed that Newcastle United contacted him about becoming director of football, however he turned them down in order to take a role at future MLS franchise St Louis City.

The former goalkeeper - who in his nomadic playing days became the only footballer to play on six continents - was serving as managing director at Fortuna Dusseldorf when he says the Premier League side got in touch about taking a role under the ownership of the proposed Saudi-led takeover.

However, before the takeover collapsed, Pfannenstiel says he turned them down because of a lack of a concrete offer as uncertainty about the takeover dragged on for months.
