What went wrong for the Colts defense this season, and where they need to improve

INDIANAPOLIS — Big things were expected from the Colts defense in its second season under coordinator Matt Eberflus.

The foundation seemed to be laid. Indianapolis had surprised on that side of the ball in Eberflus’ first year as coordinator, rising from 30th in points allowed to 10th, from 30th in total defense to 11th. Nearly all of the key pieces were back, fortified by the signing of Justin Houston at the most important defensive position in football and a defense-heavy draft class designed to improve the depth.

And after a shaky, slow start, the Colts lived up to that billing.
