Insider: How Frank Reich makes his fourth-down decisions

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts offense is on the move.

Jonathan Taylor’s picking up yards, Philip Rivers is completing passes. Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni are talking back and forth on the headset, other assistant coaches are chiming into the conversation as they talk through defensive looks, play calls, personnel.

One more voice is ever-present on the headset, soft and firm, typically in the background, a metronome preparing Reich for the game’s biggest decisions.

It’s analytics guru John Park, the man mostly in charge of keeping track of fourth-down probabilities, constantly updating Reich with what the numbers are saying, the cutoff point to go for it.
