INDIANAPOLIS – Tony Dungy was going to quit football. Well, no, Tony Dungy did quit football.
This was years ago, long before he won the 2006 Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts or coached the Tampa Bay Bucs or was the option quarterback at Minnesota. This was 1971, and Dungy had just finished his junior season at Parkside High in Jackson, Mich. When the Parkside team made him one of three captains for his senior year – but didn’t do the same for its only other three-year starter, Bobby Burton – Dungy quit.
