Colts Release Veteran Backup QB Brian Hoyer

The Indianapolis Colts announced that the team released veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer on Saturday:

It was the second cut of the day for the Colts, who also surprisingly released veteran cornerback Pierre Desir—just before officially announcing the Philip Rivers signing.

However, Hoyer’s release wasn’t nearly as surprising as Desir’s.

With the 38 year old Rivers in the fold, Hoyer’s “veteran voice” may have no longer been needed in the Colts quarterback room.

The former New England Patriots backup quarterback and NFL journeyman was signed just a short time before last season started—in the wake of Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement, as the Colts scrambled to find a capable veteran backup quarterback to Jacoby Brissett.
