NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State track and field's Jake Gillum and soccer's Ashley Santos were named the male and female recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference's Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award Winner, announced Tuesday.
The MVC Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee selected Gillum and Santos from a field of league student-athletes who met the award criteria, including academic achievement, athletics excellence and service and leadership. Illinois State is the first school to sweep the award, which began in 2000, since the Redbirds' Jacob Hendren and Ashley Rosch were honored in 2016.
